Accessibility

We want this site to be usable by as many people as possible, including people using a screen reader, a keyboard on its own, magnification, or a browser set to reduce motion or transparency.

What we aim for

This site aims to meet WCAG 2.1 level AA.

How it was tested

Every page was checked with automated tooling as part of the build, at desktop (1440px) and mobile (390px) widths:

  • axe-core on every route, with zero WCAG 2.1 A and AA violations required before the site could be released.
  • Colour contrast checked against the brand palette before any component was built. Four colour pairings inherited from the previous site did not meet AA and were changed: body text was darkened slightly, and gold text on a light background now uses a darker variant of the same hue. The brand gold is unchanged everywhere it already passed.
  • Keyboard operation checked with a scripted pass over the navigation, the Telecoms mega-menu, the service page tabs and the Book a Call form: that the skip link is the first thing focused, that the mega-menu opens from the keyboard and returns focus to its button when closed with Escape, that arrow keys move between tabs, that advancing a form step moves focus to that step and going back keeps what you typed, and that the pop-up form closes with Escape.

Automated testing catches a good deal but not everything, so if something here does not work for you we would rather hear about it than not.

What we have built in

  • A skip link to the main content on every page.
  • Visible focus indicators throughout, designed to stay visible on the dark header and the green footer as well as on white.
  • Content that is fully readable with no CSS and no JavaScript. Scroll animations are layered on top and are never what makes text appear.
  • The background video on the homepage is muted, and is replaced by a still image for visitors whose system asks for reduced motion.
  • The translucent buttons become solid for visitors whose system asks for reduced transparency.
  • Text that reflows without horizontal scrolling down to 320px.

Known issues

  • Some images carry no description. Photographs and product shots migrated from the previous site are decorative and are marked as such. Where an image carries information a caption does not, we are still working through them.
  • The logo is a bitmap rather than a vector, so it may look soft at very high magnification. A vector version has been requested.
